Spartans Travel to SCSU, NCCU in Matchups of Top MEAC Teams

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's basketball looks to continue the strong start to the MEAC season following a pair of wins over Coppin State and Morgan State last weekend. The Spartans visit South Carolina State at 4 p.m. Saturday in Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center in Orangeburg, S.C., and North Carolina Central at 9 p.m. on Monday at McDougald-McLendon Arena in Durham, N.C.

Monday's game with NCCU will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Fans will also be able to listen both games this weekend on 91.1 FM.

The Spartans (14-4, 5-0 MEAC) will face off with two of the top four teams in the conference this weekend. The Bulldogs are even on the season at 10-10 and are 2-2 in the MEAC after a pair of wins over Maryland-Eastern Shore and Delaware State last weekend.

Similarly, the Eagles 8-9 and 2-0 in the conference after wins over MDES and DSU in MEAC action.

The Spartans continued their best start as a Division I program sweeping both games at home last week, downing Coppin State 84-77 on Saturday and Morgan State on ESPNU on Monday, 82-62. 

NSU vs. SCSU/NCCU Tip-Ins
  • Senior Joe Bryant Jr. continues to lead the MEAC in scoring. He is averaging 16.2 points per game. He also leads the MEAC (seventh nationally) with a 93.0 free-throw percentage.
  • Bryant is now 48 points shy of reaching 1,000 for his career.
  • NSU has held two of its last three opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the floor. Last weekend the Spartans kept MSU to just 31% shooting. Only nationally-ranked Xavier (54%) has shot over .500 against NSU this season.
  • NSU has the best record (14-4) in Virginia among scholarship level programs (Division I/II).
  • SCSU is even on the season both and in the MEAC. After opening with conference losses to Coppin State and Morgan State, the Bulldogs won both their MEAC games last week against MDES (69-60) and DSU (64-62).
  • TJ Madlock and Cameron Jones average double-digit points for SCSU. Madlock averages 12.1 per game while Jones scores 10.9 per contest.
  • The Bulldogs are 4-4 at home this year but are 0-2 at home against MEAC opponents.
  • NCCU has only played two MEAC games thus far with wins over DSU (73-49) and MDES (75-63) last week.
  • Randy Miller Jr. and Justin Wright are the only two Eagles averaging double-figures from the floor. Miller leads the team with 13.1 points per game while Wright is scoring 10.3 for NCCU.
  • Kris Monroe leads the Eagles with 86 rebounds while both he and Dontavius King are averaging 5.1 rebounds per game.
