COLUMBIA, S.C. – Indya Richards won the long jump and
Malika Pride set a new school record in the 300-meter dash for the NSU women's track and field team over the weekend at the South Carolina Invitational.
Richards smashed her PR in winning the long jump. Her best leap was 19 feet, 11.5 inches, the best in the MEAC and 34th ationally.
Pride was strong in both of her individual events. She was runner-up in the 300 meters in 38.48 seconds, which is a new school record according to available data. Pride also posted a season-best time in the 200, 24.14 seconds, in finishing seventh (fourth among collegians).
NSU also got top-10 finish on the track from
Kara Grant, who placed ninth in the 800 meters (2:16.05).
Other highlights in the field included a pair of top-five finishes in the invitational weight throw: freshman
Leslie Young placed third with a top effort of 54 feet, 1 inch, and junior
Arieana Parker was fourth with a season-best throw of 52-10.25.
Additionally,
Destiny Hooks PRed in the pole vault with a top height of 10-2, No. 2 in the MEAC; and
Tiara Simms placed 10
th in the shot put with a mark of 39-10.5.
The Spartans compete at the Virginia Beach Sports Center next weekend for the first time as part of the East Coast Invitational.
