NORFOLK, Va. – One day after Norfolk State football spoiled Morgan State's Homecoming with a dramatic road victory, the NSU volleyball program joined in on the fun. The Spartans swept Morgan State 3-0 on Sunday, earning their first 3-1 start to MEAC play since 2012.
Â
NSU (3-11, 3-1 MEAC) earned set victories of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18 to secure the team's second sweep in its last three matches. It was the Spartans first victory at Morgan State (2-17, 1-4) since 2018.
Â
Carla Hernandez led the Spartans with team-highs of 11 kills and seven digs.
Nicole Rodriguez also notched seven digs, while
Shonte Seale and
Sydney McCree each added seven kills, the latter tying her career-best.
Â
Hernandez got the Spartans focused early, posting a kill and service ace to start the match. Back-to-back kills by
Adlene Jideofor and
Sydney McCree gave the Spartans a three-point lead, which the team stretched out to five soon after.
Â
A 5-0 Bears run tied things up at 13, but the Spartans responded with four straight points of their own. This time, the cushion was enough, as the Spartans closed things out to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Â
Morgan State opened the second game with a 4-0 burst, but the Spartans maintained their composure. Seale recorded two kills during a six-point surge from NSU, giving the Spartans a 14-13 advantage.
Â
After the Bears captured another tight lead, Norfolk State would need a 3-0 run to tie things up again. Defensive specialist
Myleah Carter notched a kill from the back line, her fourth of the season.
Â
McCree put the second game away in riveting fashion. After a Hernandez kill trimmed the Morgan State lead to one, McCree stumped the Bears' with three consecutive service aces to steal the set.
Â
The Spartans' defense continued to come up huge down the stretch, holding the Bears to a -.031 hitting percentage in the final game, and a .057 total for the match. Hernandez added four more kills to her total in the third set, as NSU cruised to a 25-18 clincher.
Â
After two bouts in Baltimore, the Spartans return home on Friday, Oct. 14 to face South Carolina State at Gill Gymnasium. The match will start at 6 p.m. and be live streamed on HBCU League Pass+.
