NORFOLK, Va. – After a Senior Day sweep over Morgan State, the Norfolk State volleyball team looks to keep the momentum going during a pair of road games in the Carolinas this weekend.
Â
NSU (6-14, 6-4 MEAC) faces South Carolina State (0-22, 0-11) on Friday evening at 6 p.m., before traveling to Durham, N.C. on Sunday for a 1 p.m. meeting against North Carolina Central (5-17, 4-7).
Â
Last Time Out
Â
The Spartans gave their five seniors a sweep as going-away gift on Senior Day last weekend, defeating Morgan State 3-0 for the second time this season. With setter
Sydney McCree sidelined by an injury, junior
Sofie Langer stepped up without hesitation, leading the Spartans in assists (27) and digs (13).
Â
Shonte Seale put up a team-best 10 kills, while defensive specialist
Alondra Hernandez stuffed the stat sheet with seven digs, five service aces and three kills.
Adlene Jideofor posted a team-high four blocks, giving her 17 total blocks in the Spartans' last three matches.
Â
McCree's Accolades Continue
Â
Despite playing just one match last week, McCree put together a strong enough performance to earn MEAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. The Durham native posted 36 assists, 11 digs, three kills, two service aces, and a block against Coppin State, the fourth double-double of her young career.
Â
Against the Eagles, McCree also bypassed the 500-assist milestone for her freshman campaign. She's now racked up six matches with 30 or more assists, including one 48-assist performance against N.C. Central.
Â
Last Meetings
Â
NSU took care of business quickly in its first meeting of the season with SCSU, allowing no more than 11 points in any set of the 3-0 sweep. Seale led the Spartans with seven kills, while
Carla Hernandez and
Paola Matos added six each.
Â
Norfolk State's first showdown with NCCU didn't end as happily, however. Despite
Carla Hernandez (22 kills), Rodriguez (29 digs), and McCree (48 assists) posting some of the highest single-match marks in program history, the Eagles came back from a 2-0 deficit to break the Spartans' hearts in five sets.
Â
While a chance for revenge looms on Sunday, the Spartans also have the opportunity for their third regular season sweep of the season on Friday against the Bulldogs, after winning both matchups against UMES and Morgan State.
