Bowling Opens Season with 4th-Place Showing at VUU Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. – The Norfolk State bowling team opened its 2022-23 season last weekend at the Virginia Union Invitational, placing fourth in the team standings and logging a 6-7 record.

The Spartans opened the tournament with a strong showing in Friday's baker games. NSU went 4-1 on the first day with wins over Fayetteville State (811-771), Howard (703-641), Virginia State (740-380) and Virginia Union (717-541), along with a narrow loss to Mt. St. Mary's (792-776).

The Spartans then went 1-4 in tradition games on Saturday. NSU began the day with a 743-663 win over Bowie State, highlighted by a 190 by Megan Wheat – the top single-game score for a Spartan over the weekend. NSU went on to drop an 829-728 loss to Coppin State, an 847-699 decision to Fayetteville State, an 882-760 decision to Mt. St. Mary's and concluded the day with a slim 767-736 loss to Howard.

Wheat had the highest total pinfall in tradition games for NSU, knocking down 730 pins for a 146 average. Trinity Gray knocked down 728 pins for a 145.6 average. NSU's freshmen also fared well in their opportunities. LaShauna Burrus had the highest average among Spartans in traditional games, with a 154.8 average in four games. Kaiya Henderson averaged 155.7 in three games.

On Sunday, the Spartans opened bracket play with a win over Fayetteville State before dropping games to Coppin State and FSU later in the bracket to finish in fourth place.

NSU returns to action this weekend at the first MEAC meet of the season in Millsboro, Delaware.
