4 Spartans to Participate in HBCU Legacy Bowl

| By:
NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State football team will have four players compete in this Saturday's HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans.

The HBCU Legacy Bowl, which is presented by the Black College Football Hall of Fame, is a postseason all-star game showcasing the best NFL draft-eligible football players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Quarterback Juwan Carter, offensive lineman Jalen Powell and defensive linemen De'Shaan Dixon and Chris Myers will all represent the Spartans in the game, which kicks off at 4 p.m. ET from Yulman Stadium. The contest will be televised live on the NFL Network.

NSU's four players match North Carolina Central and South Carolina State for the most of any conference program. All four of NSU's selections earned first-team All-MEAC accolades following the 2021 season.

Carter earned MEAC Offensive Player of the Year honors this past season. After leading all MEAC quarterbacks in passing yards (2,511), touchdown passes (21), completion percentage (63.8) and efficiency (150.4). He also ran for 390 yards and six touchdowns. A four-time MEAC Offensive Player of the Week in 2021, Carter leaves NSU as the school's all-time leader with 9,271 passing yards, 10,248 total yards, 749 completions and 1,270 attempts.

Powell started all 11 games at left guard and all 45 in his career and earned two MEAC offensive Lineman of the Week honors in 2021. He helped the Spartans lead the league in scoring offense, total offense and rushing yards per game.

Dixon is participating in his second postseason college all-star game. He also played in the East-West Shrine Game earlier this month. Dixon made 54 tackles and recorded MEAC-high totals of 12.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks. He added four quarterback hurries and four pass breakups.

Myers ranked second in the MEAC behind Dixon with 5.5 sacks. He also logged 40 tackles, 7.5 for loss, and was MEAC Defensive Player of the Week after the Elizabeth City State win. In two seasons after transferring to NSU from Middle Tennessee, Myers tallied 76 total tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks, including a MEAC-high 9.0 in 2019.
