Brewer Led Spartans at Stallings Invitational Hosted By N.C. A&T

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Crystal Brewer bowled a 200 against Texas Southern and followed up with a 214 against Coppin State to lead the Norfolk State bowling team over the weekend at the Vernell Stallings Invitational hosted by N.C. A&T. As a team the Spartans 3-9 with wins over Belmont Abbey in a Baker format match along with wins over Florida A&M and Texas Southern.

Both traditional and Baker formats were used for various matchups throughout the weekend. In the Baker format matchups dropped matches to Howard (883-739), Tusculum (965-800), NC A&T (1093-763), and Delaware State (991-846). In the last matchup the Spartans won over Belmont Abbey (750-730).

In traditional matchups, the Spartans picked up wins against both the Rattlers and Tigers but fell to Maryland-Eastern Shore (872-816), Vanderbilt (1049-880), and Coppin State (830-907).  In a pair of Baker matches that use best of match play format, the Spartans fell to Howard 4-0 but forced a game seven against Belmont Abbey, falling 4.5-2.5 after splitting the first, second, fourth, and fifth games and tying the third.

Brewer averaged 192 pins in the five traditional matches while teammate junior Chanel Staton had a game high 202 against in the win over Texas Southern and averaged 176.8 pins a match.

NSU is back at the lanes next weekend when it hosts the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational. The weekend's event takes place in nearby Chesapeake on Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6.
