DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson broke open a close game by scoring 10 runs in its final two times at bat to complete a three-game sweep of Norfolk State, 12-1 on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The game began as a pitchers' duel between NSU's
Dalton Barham and Davidson's Ryan Feczko.
NSU (3-9) opened the scoring in the second when
Steven Shaffer doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Minjae Hong. The Wildcats tied the score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second, and took a 2-1 lead in the third when another Wildcat scored on another wild pitch.
The score remained that way until the seventh. Parker Nolan walked with the bases loaded to give the Wildcats an insurance run. Then Davidson exploded for nine runs in the eighth, capped by a Trevor Candelaria's grand slam, to break the game open.
Jacob Council had two hits to lead the Spartans' seven-hit attack. Barham allowed just three hits over five innings, his longest outing of the season, but was charged with the loss.
Feczko struck out nine over six innings to get the win for Davidson (12-3).
The Spartans are back in action at Longwood on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
