FARMVILLE, Va. – Playing its first midweek game of the year, Norfolk State saw host Longwood scored seven runs in the second and 11 in the sixth on the way to a 24-1 Lancers' win on Tuesday afternoon at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
Hayden Harris, Gregory Ryan and Michael Dolberry each drove in three runs for Longwood (7-10) in the first of two matchups with the Spartans (3-10) this year. Longwood outhit NSU 14-9 and benefitted from 17 walks.
The Spartans had seven different players notch hits, led by
Raphy Rodriguez and
Steven Shaffer, who both went 2-for-4. The Spartans' lone run came via freshman
Kam Walker, who hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the top of the seventh.
Dionte Brown and
Jacob Council both hit doubles in the game.
Shaffer also pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief for NSU. He played second base and right field earlier in the game.
The Spartans remain on the road for the start of conference play, which kicks off with a four-game series at Maryland Eastern Shore beginning on Friday in Salisbury, Md.
