Norfolk, Va. – Playing its third match in four days, the Norfolk State women's tennis team lost 6-1 to Longwood on Sunday at NSU Tennis Complex.
Aleksandra Evdokimova earned the Spartans' lone point of the day.
The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 9, but moved to Sunday due to inclement weather earlier in the week.
NSU dropped the doubles point to open the dual, losing two of the three doubles matches.
Laura Ruiz and
Zada McMorris lost to LU's Emma Nurgazieva and Karina Rizvanova 6-2, before
Amber Fuller and
Andrea Barcenas dropped their match 6-2 on Court 3. Evdokimova and
Breana Cook defeated Maria Saez and Nina Hederich 6-3 at the No. 2 position, but the Lancers had already clinched the doubles point.
Although it only resulted in one point on the scoreboard, Evdokimova improved to 2-0 on the day with a 6-2, 6-3 singles win over top-seeded Nurgazieva. The freshman's third singles victory of the season, Evdokimova has now won three of her last four matches.
Fuller and Rizvana battled through an intense first set, with the latter winning 7-5. Rizvana received the win when an injury prevented Fuller from Fuller from continuing.
Despite the momentum from her doubles win, Cook couldn't overcome LU's Maria Saez at No. 3 singles, dropping the match 6-1, 6-1. McMorris lost to Hederich 6-0, 6-0.
Ruiz and Barcenas both came out on the losing end of fierce three-set competitions at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Barcenas won the first set 6-3, and lost the second 6-4. Ruiz came back after losing the first set 6-3, winning the next 6-2. The two Spartans fought to the end, both falling 9-11 in their respective third set tiebreaks.
NSU falls to 1-5 with the loss, heading into a busy opening stretch for conference play. The Spartans head to Cary, N.C. on Thursday for four matches in three days at the MEAC Tennis Roundup.
