DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – Crystal Brewer and Megan Wheat lead the Norfolk State bowling team over the weekend at the TNBA/HBCU Championship that was hosted by Jackson State. For their efforts they were named to the All-Tournament team with Brewer earning First Team honors while Wheat was a Second Team selection.
As a team the Spartans finished ninth in the bracketed format, finishing ahead of Alabama A&M, Texas Southern and Grambling State.
Brewer finished fourth in the individual standings with a 189.60 average during the games on Saturday. Her 244 in Game 3 was a tournament-high while she also scored above 200 in Game Two. Wheat finished sixth in the individual standings with a 184.40 average and had a pair of games above 200. She finished Game Five with a 218 and Game Six with a 210. In total, 73 bowlers competed in the weekend's event.
As a team, the Spartans went 4-9 between both traditional and Baker games. In its traditional round games NSU opened with an 804-767 win over Florida A&M in Game One and a 911-620 win over Grambling State in Game Four. The Spartans fell to Fayetteville State (811-767), Morgan State (943-854), and Bowie State (786-780).
In the bracketed games on Sunday, NSU opened with a 790-750 loss to BSU before winning its final two games against Texas Southern (875-802) and Alabama A&M (1054-1159).
The Spartans are off until March 25 when they return to Pinboy's at the Beach in Virginia Beach for the 2022 MEAC Bowling Championship. NSU enters as the No. 8 seed and faces off against No. 9 Howard in the first match of day at 9 a.m. The winner advances to play No. 1 North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m. The loser takes on the loser of the No. 3 MD-Eastern Shore and No. 6 UAB match at 2 p.m.
