Towson, Md. – Norfolk State couldn't overcome the depth of Towson's lineup on Sunday, falling 5-2 to the Tigers on the road.
Aleksandra Evdokimova and
Amber Fuller earned the Spartans two points of the afternoon.
NSU dropped the opening doubles point, as
Zada McMorris and
Andrea Barcenas lost 6-1 at the No. 2 position before Fuller and Evdokimova were defeated 6-2 at No. 1.
Breana Cook and
Laura Ruiz trailed 4-2 when the Tigers clinched the point.
After being outplayed in doubles, the Spartans fared much better in singles play. Of the 12 matches that NSU has lost the opening point this season, Sunday was just the third time that NSU has battled back to win two or more singles matches.
Barcenas lost 6-0, 6-0 to Towson's Themis Haliou at the No. 2 slot, before Grant lost by the same score at No. 5 shortly after. After her impressive singles triump at South Carolina State last week and a doubles victory against Hampton on Friday, Cook's win streak came to an end on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Sarah Pospischill at the No. 4 position.
After losing a tight first set to Temple's Olivia Rothfeld 6-4, Ruiz couldn't overcome an injury in the second, giving Rothfeld the win by opponent retirement.
But the Spartans wouldn't go home empty handed. Fuller got NSU on the scoreboard with a straight-sets victory at the No. 2 position, defeating Jessica Assenmacher 6-4, 6-2. Evdokimova grabbed the Spartans second point of the day moments later, taking down Amelia Lawson 6-3, 6-4.
NSU dropped to 2-13 with the loss, returning to the court on Wednesday for a match against Hampton.
