Spartans Trounce Trojans 6-1

NORFOLK, Va. – NSU faced off against Virginia State for the second time in six days on Thursday, but this time on the road at VSU Tennis Complex in Petersburg, Virginia. The Spartans did just fine without home court advantage, though, cruising past the Trojans 6-1.

Ibrahim Abbas and Roosevelt Brown III won the No. 2 doubles match by default, before Vincent Jarvis and Ryan Richter lost 6-0 at the No. 3 position. Federico Rebecchini and Hugo Massoni Lena, fresh off earning MEAC Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively, took care of business for the Spartans on Court 1, winning the doubles point with a 6-0 victory.

The duo carried the momentum into singles play, starting with Massoni Lena's 6-0, 6-0 victory on Court 2 over VSU's Laurance Britt. Rebecchini defeated Nigel Stewart 6-0, 6-2 soon after at the No. 1 slot, and Abbas beat Jalen Bell 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. Jarvis won position six by default, and Richter lost a three-set marathon with Alan Diggs 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 5.

After the team's last match against VSU was cut short as he neared victory, Brown got into the win column on Wednesday. Brown won the first set against Joshua Pologne at the No. 4 slot in the lineup, losing the second 6-3. The NSU freshman outlasted Pologne in the end, earning a 10-6 victory in the third set tiebreak.

Norfolk State (2-12) travels to Hampton on Thursday for the Spartans' third match against the Pirates in three days.
