CARY, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team's season came to an end on Thursday with a 4-0 loss to South Carolina State in the MEAC Tennis Championships at Cary Tennis Park. The Spartans finished the season 3-15, 1-5 in the conference.
SCSU took control of the match early by pulling out the opening doubles point.
Andrea Barcenas and
Breana Cook lost at the No. 3 spot 6-2, before SCSU clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 over
Aleksandra Evdokimova and
Amber Fuller.
Zada McMorris and
Andrea Barcenas led 4-3 at No. 2 when play stopped.
The Lady Bulldogs used that momentum in singles play, winning the first set on five of the six courts. Ikram Rassif defeated
Niya Grant 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 slot to give SCSU a 2-0 lead, while Nalanda Silva beat Barcenas 6-2, 6-1 shortly after. Teodora Vujicic defeated Fuller 6-2, 6-2 to send the Lady Bulldogs to the semifinals.
Three matches went unfinished after SCSU clinched the victory. Evdokimova led 1-0 on Court 1 in the second set, after dropping the first in a tiebreaker.
Breana Cook won the first set 6-2 at No. 4, but trailed in the second. After losing the first set 6-1 at No. 6, Ruiz had battled back to a 5-3 lead in the second.
