Cook Notches Straight-Set Victory in NSU’s 6-1 Loss at SCSU

Orangeburg, S.C. – Norfolk State went toe-to-toe with defending MEAC champion South Carolina State in many of the afternoon's matches on Sunday, but only came out on top of one. The Spartans lost to the Bulldogs 6-1, with Breana Cook picking up NSU's lone point of the day.

The Bulldogs swept the opening doubles point, will all of the matches decided by three or less games. SCSU's Lasya Patnaik and Nalanda Silva defeated Aleksandra Evdokimova and Amber Fuller 6-3 at the No. 1 slot, before Laura Ruiz and Breana Cook lost a tight No. 3 matchup, 6-4. Zada McMorris and Andrea Barcenas were also bested 6-4 on Court 2 shortly after.

The Bulldogs received straight-set victories from Teodora Vujicic and Ikram Rassif, defeating Barcenas and McMorris at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively. After dropping the first set 6-3, an injury forced Ruiz to retire, trailing 3-0 in the second set.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, the injury woes didn't end there. Fuller cruised through the first set against Patnaik 6-1 at No. 2 singles, before losing the second 7-5. Patnaik received the victory, as an injury kept Fuller from playing any further.

Cook got NSU on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Silva at the No. 4 position, her third singles victory of the season. Evdokimova narrowly lost the first set on Court 1 against Rachida Berjane 7-6 (8-6), but bounced right back to take the second set 6-1. Berjane won the ensuing third set tiebreak 10-7 for the Bulldogs' final point of the night.

NSU drops to 2-12 on the season with the loss, 1-5 in MEAC play. The Spartans return to NSU Tennis Complex on Thursday for a non-conference meeting with Virginia State at 3 p.m.
