NORFOLK, Va. – Krew Bouldin hit the winning RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift No. 1 seed Delaware State to a 7-6 win over No. 4 seed Norfolk State in the first game of the 2022 MEAC Baseball Championship on Friday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
DSU advances to a noon game on Friday against the winner of Thursday's game between Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore. NSU will face the loser of that same game at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Mike Worthington drew a one-out walk to start the Hornets' rally in the 10
th. After Miguel Rivera flew out, Trey Paige was intentionally walked. Bouldin then lined a single down the right-field line for his fourth hit of the game to keep DSU in the winner's bracket.
DSU (23-21) held a 6-4 lead into the later innings, only to see the Spartans (15-31) rally in the ninth to force extra innings.
Malcolm Perry and
Brandon Cleveland led off the ninth by drawing consecutive walks off Hornet reliever C.J. Loper. After a fielder's choice by
Raphy Rodriguez,
Dionte Brown's groundout scored Perry.
Jacob Council followed by singling through the infield to bring Rodriguez home and knot the score at 6-all.
The game was nip-and-tuck all the way. The Hornets scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, but NSU took the lead in the top of the second. Council led off the second by smashing the first pitch he saw over the wall in right field, his fourth homer of the season. Later in the frame,
Tommy Woods doubled into the left-field corner and scored on a two-out single by
Kam Walker.
DSU's Alan Alonso tripled in a run to tie the game in the third. Bouldin and Miguel Rivera singled in runs in a three-run Hornet fourth that put them on top, 5-2.
NSU closed the gap to 5-4 in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Rodriguez and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by Woods.
Brady Daniels knocked in another Hornet run in the sixth to extend the DSU advantage to 6-4.
Both teams got key contributions from their bullpens. Despite taking the loss,
James Deloatch (4-5) allowed just three hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
Mike Carrington threw four hitless innings of relief for DSU, striking out three. Ethan Edelson pitched a scoreless 10
th to earn the win.
Council went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run for NSU. Bouldin went 4-for-6 with two RBIs for the Hornets. Paige was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
