NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State women's tennis got its 2022 fall slate underway at the Elon Invitational last weekend.
Breana Cook and
Laura Ruiz put together a run in the doubles portion, while
Aleksandra Evdokimova shined in singles.
Evdokimova and
Amber Fuller started the weekend with an impressive 8-6 doubles victory over Elon's Julie Ball and Olivia Archer in the Gold doubles bracket, before falling in the second round 8-5 against Emilia Alfaro and Ralitsa Alexandrova of East Tennessee State. Evdokimova also notched a singles win that day, coming from behind to defeat Elon's All-CAA selection Lizette Reding 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Cook and Ruiz started their Friday run with a thrilling 9-8 triumph over James Madison's Lynelle Lim and Hayley Glen, winning the tiebreaker 7-4. The pair then knocked off Nuria Sanz and Cielo Tapia-Cruz of North Carolina A&T 8-4 to advance to the Phoenix draw finals.
Ruiz and Cook fell 8-2 on Saturday in the championship match against Elizabeth Tindera and Valeria Centeno from UNC Asheville. Evdokimova dropped her second-round match of the Gold singles draw 6-1, 6-0 against JMU's Daneila Voloh.
Fuller picked up the Spartans' only Sunday win, defeating Virginia Tech's Kirsten Husted in a consolation match of the Phoenix draw.
