NORFOLK, Va. - The Spartans women's volleyball team took its first conference loss to the Eagles of Coppin State University on Friday evening in three sets. Norfolk State moves to 5-7 overall and 4-1 in the MEAC standings.
NSU was led by Shonte Seale on attack with nine kills. Gabrielle Gilbert was the next highest with five kills. Alexa Harris and Adlene Jideofor each tallied four blocks. Sydney McCree put up 22 assists and six digs. Seale led the back line with 12 digs while Gilbert added six of her own.
The teams came out of the gates neck and neck sitting tied at six all through the early serves. Coppin State pulled ahead by a couple points leading 9-7 but Norfolk State pulled back and evened the score twice more at nine and ten all. The Eagles managed to reclaim and maintain the lead over the Spartans after going on a 13-4 run that put the score at 23-14 in favor of CSU. NSU rallied back slightly on a 5-1 run pulling within five points, 24-19, but Coppin State put down a final kill to claim set one 25-19.
Set two started with the teams even through the first eight serves, however, the Eagles pulled ahead 12-5 following an 8-1 rally. Three Spartan kills and three Eagle errors helped NSU pull within six points, 16-10, but CSU put down four consecutive points taking a 20-10 lead. The teams closed out set two scoring five points each putting the final score at 25-15.
Set three started off with Coppin State taking an early 7-4 lead. The Eagles continued to pull ahead 14-8 but the Spartans chipped away to pull within two-points, 18-16, following an 8-4 run. Coppin State reopened a five-point lead, 24-19, but three consecutive Norfolk State points on a Seale kill and double blocks from McCree, Harris, and Grace Smith, pulled the Spartans within two points, 24-22. Unfortunately, the Norfolk State rally was ended by a Coppin State kill as the Eagles took the game in three sets.
Norfolk State is back in action on Friday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Washington, D.C., to face Howard in MEAC action. First serve is set for 6 PM.
