BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State volleyball team couldn't come up with a road victory on a weekend trip to Baltimore, falling 3-0 to Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House.
Â
The Bears (8-19, 3-9 MEAC) defeated the Spartans (8-12, 7-6) by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-17, their second win in their last three matches.
Â
Shonte Seale led the Spartans with 12 kills on a .375 hitting percentage, while
Gabrielle Gilbert contributed nine kills.
Sydney McCree posted 24 assists, while
Fabiana Mucciola tallied 16 digs in just three sets of play.
Â
Seale got the match started with a quick kill, helping the Spartans jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first set. The Spartans maintained a small advantage for about half the set, until a 3-0 Bears run tied the game at 12-12.
Â
After Morgan State took its first lead of the day, Seale responded with a powerful kill before a Mucciola ace moments later. McCree added another ace soon after, and the Spartans retook a two-point advantage.
Â
Bears outside hitter Jourdan Page helped propel a 5-1 MSU run with a pair of kills, before serving out the final two points to earn Morgan State the opening set.
Â
Morgan State jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead in the second set, but multiple Seale kills helped the Spartans get back within one. Another Mucciola ace and Gilbert kill kept the Spartans within striking distance, but back-to-back aces from Morgan State's Biko Hollie expanded the score gap.
Â
Freshmen Gilbert and
Grace Smith contributed kills from there, but Hollie landed another ace to close out the second game.
Â
Alyssa Sampson led the Bears on a 4-0 run early in the second set, giving Morgan State a comfortable lead that it would hold the rest of the way. The Bears posted a .344 hitting percentage in the final game, keeping Norfolk State at a .185 clip.
