NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team earned their first win of the season in its home opener, defeating Virginia Wesleyan 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Spartans (1-4) clinched the doubles point with victories on Courts 1 and 2. At the No. 2 position,
Amal Gati and
Zada McMorris bested Kristina Abrams and Sophia Bibbo 6-0, before
Aleksandra Evdokimova and
Laura Ruiz took down Anna Rodgers and Christine Zalameda 6-1 at the No. 1 slot.

The Spartans carried that momentum into singles play, where Evdokimova quickly defeated Zalameda 6-0, 6-0 at the top spot of the lineup. Gati finished next, coasting past Shannon Lewes 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 slot.

Laura Ruiz took care of business against Rogers on Court 2, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Zada McMorris notched the Spartans final point of the day, beating Abrams 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

The Marlins won by default at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

Norfolk State has nine days to prepare for its next competition, facing Drexel and Temple on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Philadelphia, Pa.
