NORFOLK, Va. | The Norfolk State University softball team swept their Saturday slate against the Bucknell Bison and the Wagner Seahawks on day one of the NSU-HU Classic.
In their first game of the day, the Spartans (5-2) had a big first inning where they scored six runs for the early lead. The first score to cross the plate was by Imani Moore as she advanced on an error during Rylie Gilbreath's at-bat. Back-to-back doubles, one each from Loren Hudson and Cam Andersen, drove in two more runs scoring Gilbreath and Lisa Zorb. A ground out by Lily Potter drove home Andersen while Jade Dixon came home on a single through the lft side by Yrral Davis for the final run of the inning.
The next two innings were scoreless for both teams, but Bucknell (1-4) managed to put a single run, what would be their only run of the game, on the board in the top of the fourth inning on a homerun over the left center field wall.
NSU answered in the bottom of the fifth with a two RBI homer by Davis who hit the ball over the center field wall bring home Morgan Johnson on the play. The Spartans final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth as Emory Shorts singled to left center to drive home Brianna Rucker for the ninth NSU run. The Spartans defeated Bucknell 9-1 in six innings due to the mercy rule.
Game two started off a little slower than the first as neither team scored in the first two innings. NSU got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning as an Alison Guckin ground out drove in Maya Johnson.
The Spartans added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the score at 4-0. Lily Potter doubled to left field which drove in Leah Wisswell for the first run of the inning. Potter came home while Lauren Sheehan reached base on a short stop throwing error. Maya Johnson drove in Sheehan on a double to left field for the final run of the inning.
The Seahawks found their way on to the score board in the top of the fifth with a solo run that put the score at 4-1. NSU added two more runs in the sixth inning and held Wagner College off the board in the top of the seventh to win game two 6-1.
The Spartans (5-2) return to the field tomorrow Sunday, February 19, when the wrap up action at the NSU-Hampton Classic at the NSU Softball Field. Norfolk State will face Georgetown at 3 PM.
