NORFOLK, Va. | The Norfolk State University softball team completed the weekend with a 6-1 victory over the Hoyas of Georgetown University to conclude the NSU-HU Classic.
Georgetown (2-5) came into the game against Norfolk State (6-2) after completing a 13 inning, four hour marathon against the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University.
The Spartans got off to a hot start scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Imani Moore was walked in for the first run while Jade Dixon drove in Leah Wisswell on a single to left for the second. Rylie Gilbreath drove in Victoria Ruiz for the last run on a groundout.
Neither team scored in the second and while NSU added two more in the bottom third to increase its lead to five runs. Gilbreath hit a double to center field that drove in Gabby Vaughan and Lily Potter.
The Hoyas got on the board in the top of the fifth on a hone run hit over the center field wall that put the score at 5-1. The Spartans added one final run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a Lauren Sheehan groundout drove in Maya Johnson for the final run of the game.
The Spartans (6-2) return to the field next weekend when they co-host the Spartan/Pirate Classic at the NSU Softball Field. Norfolk State will face Buffalo and Stony Brook on Friday at 12:30 PM and 3 PM respectively.
