NORFOLK, Va. | The Norfolk State University softball team split their Saturday slate against the University of Buffalo and Stony Brook College on day one of the Battle of the Bay Classic.
In their first game of the day, the Spartans (7-3) were held scoreless be the Bulls of Buffalo while the visiting team put up three runs on Norfolk State.
NSU had an opportunity in the bottom of the first inning as they left runners in scoring position at second and third, but could not drive them in to score. Other chances for the Spartans came in the bottom of the third and sixth innings when NSU left a single runner on the base paths as the Bulls held on to claim the 3-0 victory.
Game two saw two big innings from the Spartans in the bottom of the second and fourth innings where NSU posted five-plus runs in both innings. Four of the five runs in the second inning came in off of back-to-back home runs by the Spartans, one from Morgan Johnson (3 RBI) and the other from Lauren Sheehan (1 RBI).
The six runs in the fourth inning were driven in by a triple, a sacrifice ground out, a double for two RBI and a single for a pair of RBI. Morgan Johnson tallied her fourth RBI of the game with her triple to left center and came home the next at-bat from Lauren Sheehan. A Lauren Hudson double to right scored Imani Moore and Alison Guckin, while Rylie Gilbreath's single to right drove home Gabby Vaughan and Leah Wisswell.
The Seawolves collected three runs in the game but the 11 runs posted by the Spartans were too great a feat to overcome as NSU claimed the eight-run victory in five innings.
The Spartans (7-3) return to the field on Sunday, February 26, when the wrap up action at the Battle of the Bay Classic at the NSU Softball Field. Norfolk State will face Colgate at 2 PM.
