WILLIAMSBURG, Va. | The Norfolk State University baseball team visited William & Mary on Tuesday afternoon as the Spartans suffered a 34-1 setback at Plumeri Park.
William & Mary (9-8) jumped out to a 7-0 lead, by scoring seven runs on three hits, while taking advantage of two NSU errors in the first inning.
The Spartans (3-12) got a run back in the top half of the second as Justin Journette opened with a walk and stole second. Steven Shaffer, who went 3-for-3, followed with a double to right center, plating Journette and cutting the Tribe lead to 7-1.
William & Mary put the game away with a nine-run third inning, highlighted by a grand slam homer by Cole Ragone as the Tribe extended the lead to 16-1.
The Tribe added three more runs in the sixth, six in the seventh and eighth innings.
Norfolk State finished with one run on six hits and stranded nine on base.
William & Mary scored 34 runs on 14 hits and took advantage of 20 walks and 10 hit-by-pitches.
Kevin Chinnia (0-1) took the loss as he surrendered seven runs (six earned) on three hits with a pair of walks. Liam Royster, Mac Yarbrough, John Horton, Joe Lafave and Noah Wiggins all saw action out of the bullpen.
Garrett Newsome (1-0) started for William & Mary, working one inning. Nick Lottchea, Noah Hertzler and Matt Howat and Kyle Locklear worked in relief.

The Spartans begin a three-game non-conference series at VMI, starting on Friday. First pitch against the Keydets in the opener is set for 5 p.m. from Gray-Minor Stadium. The second game of the series, on Saturday, begins at 2 p.m. and the finale on Sunday starts at 1 p.m. All games will be streamed live on ESPN+
