Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team split a pair of matches at Cary Tennis Park on Thursday to open the MEAC Tennis Roundup.

The Spartans fell 5-2 against Morgan State early in the morning, before cruising past Coppin State 6-1 in the final match of the evening.

Aleksandra Evodkimova and
Breana Cook went earned singles victories in both competitions.

Morgan State won the doubles point of the morning match with a pair of victories on Courts 1 and 2. Hannah Smith and Asmara Rose defeated Evdokimova and
Amal Gati 7-5 at the top position, while Ana-Lei Kalawa and Natalia Switschnik took down
Zada McMorris and
Niya Grant 6-1.

Cook and
Laura Ruiz led 5-4 against Lauryn Hall and Averiana Mitchell on the third court when the Bears clinched the opening point.

Evdokimova earned a 6-1, 7-6 victory at the top singles position over Smith, continuing a hot road stretch for the sophomore. Cook also got on the board for the Spartans, overcoming multiple match points in a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win at the No. 4 slot.

The Bears won singles matches on Courts 2, 3, 5, and 6 to take the match. Gati put up a fight at the No. 2 position against Mitchell, ultimately falling 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 in three sets.

Norfolk State got off to a quick start against Coppin, winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Evodkimova and Gati defeated Megan Etienne and Emperess Johnson 6-1 on Court 1, while Cook and Ruiz took down Mackenzie Jones and Kenyange Kaounde by the same score on Court 2.

The Spartans continued the dominance in singles play, winning five of the six matches. Four of NSU's victories came in straight sets.

Evdokimova set the tone with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the top position, before Gati defeated Ettienne 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Ruiz also picked up a commanding win at No. 3, leading 6-2, 2-0 before winning by opponent retirement.

Cook continued her strong day with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Jones at the No. 4 position. McMorris picked up Norfolk State's last win of the evening, battling to a 6-3, 4-6 1-0 (10-5) victory over Kaounde at No. 5 singles.

The Spartans look to keep the momentum going on Friday against Delaware State at 9 a.m.
