NORFOLK, Va. -- The Norfolk State University softball team dropped both games on Saturday to the Blue Hens of the University of Delaware and the Nittany Lions of Penn State on day one of the Pirate/Spartan Classic.
The Spartans (7-6) started game one off by scoring the first run of the game as a
Kenna Higa single to right field drove
Imani Moore across home plate. The Blue Hens (6-9) responded in the top of the second with a trio of runs taking a 3-1 lead.
NSU bounced back to reclaim the lead, 5-3, in the bottom of the second posting a four run inning.
Morgan Johnson drove in
Victoria Ruiz on a single to center field to start the Spartan run. Pitcher
Cam Andersen and
Yrral Davis both came home on a single bunt by
Alison Guckin, while the final run came in as
Gabby Vaughan sent Moore home after grounding out to second base.
Delaware quickly came back to take the lead in the top of the third as the UD catcher homered over the center field fence for a grand slam putting the score at 7-5.
UD added four more runs in the top of the fourth going up 11-5 after the Blue Hens hit back-to-back home runs for a combined three runs. Delaware added one run in the top of the fifth and two in the top of the sixth to win the game 14-5 in six innings.
Game two saw the Spartans score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, much like what happened in the first game of the day. A
Gabby Vaughan double to left field scored
Imani Moore putting NSU up 1-0.
After NSU kept PSU off the board in the first two innings, the Nittany Lions clawed back posting six runs in the top of the third and added a solo run in the fourth taking a 7-1 lead.
Neither team found the score board in the fifth or sixth innings and Penn State added a final run in the top of the seventh en route to clinching their win 8-1.
Norfolk State hits the field again on Sunday, March 5, against Binghamton and Delaware at 10 AM and 3 PM respectively. Fans can follow all games of the Pirate/Spartan Classic played at Norfolk State via the
