Spartans end the Pirate/Spartan Classic with two losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va. -- The Norfolk State University softball team dropped both games on Sunday to the Bearcats of Binghamton University and the Blue Hens of the University of Delaware to close out action at the Pirate/Spartan Classic. 

The Bearcats (9-5) took early advantage of some Spartan (7-8) errors in the top of the first inning scoring four runs out of the gate. The Spartans (7-8) answered in the bottom half of the inning will a pair of runs that put the score at 4-2. A Gabby Vaughan single to left field scored Imani Moore for the first run while Vaughan came home on a double to left by shortstop Jade Dixon

Binghamton scored one run in the next three innings and a trio in the top of the fifth to pull ahead 10-2 while Norfolk State was held scoreless throughout the remainder of the game. 

The Spartan pitching corps struck out seven batters with sophomore Brierra Tyler striking out a career-high six batters. 

In the second game of the day, the Spartans opponents, the Blue Hens from the University of Delaware (7-10), scored first with a single run in the top of the first inning. NSU answered in the bottom of the second by evening the score as Lisa Zorb singled to right field scoring Jade Dixon

Delaware added a run in the third while adding two more in the top if the fifth taking a 4-1 lead. Norfolk State added another run to their total in the bottom of the fifth after Kenna Higa hit a solo home run to center field. The Spartans evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning as an Imani Moore single drove in Lily Potter for the first run while Moore came home a little while later after Gabby Vaughan reached on an error by the second baseman. 

Neither team managed to score in the seventh inning forcing extra innings and saw both teams go scoreless in the eighth before the Blue Hens sent one in across home plate to take the 5-4 lead, while holding NSU scoreless in the bottom of the ninth as Delaware claimed the victory.

Norfolk State takes to the field again next weekend when they hit the road for the first time this season to participate in the Purple-Gold Invitational hosted by East Carolina University. The Spartans will face the Pirates of ECU and the Minutewomen of UMass Amherst.
