NORFOLK, Va. | Dalton Barham fanned 10 batters and scattered just two hits in a complete-game shutout as the Norfolk State University baseball team picked up its first-ever victory over VMI in a 3-0 win on Wednesday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.
Barham (1-3) surrendered one hit in the second inning (bunt single) and a base hit through the left side in the fourth inning, but that was all VMI (18-15) could get off the left-handed pitcher. He walked just one, which came in the fourth inning.
Norfolk State (8-22) did all its damage in the third inning, with three runs on four hits.
Kam Walker opened the frame with an infield hit and moved to second on a
Malcolm Perry bloop single to right. After back-to-back strikeouts,
Manny Jackson brought Walker across on a single up the middle.
Jacob Council followed with a double off the wall in left center as Perry and Jackson scored.
That would be all the offense the Spartans would need as the Keydets, who swept a three-game series over NSU in the middle of March, went down in order during the final five innings.
Norfolk State finished with three runs on seven hits and left seven on base, while VMI registered two hits and stranded one on base.
Holden Wilkerson (3-1) took the loss as he gave up three runs on six hits, struck out six and walked three in 4.2 innings. Will Riley and Nathan Hawley pitched in relief.
