NORFOLK, Va. – Playing its first match in two weeks, the Norfolk State women's tennis team had no issue shaking any rust off on Sunday afternoon, taking down Virginia State 5-2 at NSU Tennis Complex.

The Spartans took care of business during doubles play to go up 1-0 in the match.
Aleksandra Evdokimova and
Amal Gati cruised past Ashleigh Charles and Ginger Johnson 6-0 at the No. 1 slot, before
Breana Cook and
Laura Ruiz defeated Jalyn Jones and Makensie Pago 6-2 on Court 2.

Evdokimova kept the momentum going in singles play, beating Charles 6-0, 6-1. Virginia State picked up victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but Cook and Ruiz earned straight-set victories on Courts 2 and 3, respectively to give the Spartans a comfortable cushion.

Gati defeated Jones 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 position, putting the finishing touch on a comfortable win for the Spartans.

Norfolk State returns to the court on Monday at 12 p.m. against South Carolina State.
