Spartans Fall Behind Early in Loss to Knights

TEANECK, N.J. | The Norfolk State University baseball team fell behind early and could not recover in a 12-5 Northeast Conference (NEC) loss to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

Fairleigh Dickson (23-13-1 overall, 14-6 NEC) plated three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning to quickly grab a 3-0 lead.

Norfolk State (8-28, 5-12) got a run back in the top half of the third inning.

With two down, Nathan Ade reached on an error and moved all the way to third on an infield hit by Brandon Cleveland. Ralphael Rodriguez followed with a single to left as Ade scored on the play as the Spartans closed the gap to 3-1.

However, the Knights exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame, extended the advantage to 8-1.

The Spartans picked up two runs in the fourth inning on a Jacob Council two-run homer, cutting the deficit to 8-3.

The Knights put the game away with a four-run seventh, stretching the margin to 12-3.

NSU added two runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough.

Cam Mazell opened the frame with a double down the line in left. Dominic Joseph drew a walk. With one out, Ade singled to center, scoring Mazell from second and Joseph came across on a ground out by Cleveland as the Spartans closed the gap to 12-5.

Norfolk State finished with five runs on seven hits, committed one error and stranded five on base. Fairleigh Dickinson registered 12 runs on 13 hits, had one error and left eight on base.
