NORFOLK, Va. | Dionte Brown and Dominic Joseph each collected a pair of hits, but it wasn't enough as Norfolk State University opened its Northeast Conference (NEC) series on Friday afternoon with a 9-5 loss to Wagner College at Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.
Wagner (26-21 overall, 17-8 NEC) struck for five runs and took advantage of three errors in the top of the second inning to grab a 5-0 advantage.
Norfolk State (9-36, 6-19) responded in the bottom of the frame as Justin Journette reached on an error and came across to score on a double to left center by Cam Mazell as the Spartans closed the gap to 5-1.
NSU cut the deficit to 5-2 in the third inning as Joseph, who singled to open the frame, when Jacob Council reached on a fielder's choice.
The Seahawks plated three runs on three hits in the top half of the fourth, extending the lead to 8-2.
Norfolk State rallied with a run in the fifth inning as Brown, who reached on an infield hit, scored on a triple to left center by Steven Shaffer.
The Spartans continued to cut the margin, scoring two runs in the sixth inning, trimming the Seahawk lead to 8-5.
Journette began the frame with a double to left and advanced to third on a Mazell groundout. Brandon Cleveland scored Journette with base hit to left. After a pitching change, Cleveland advanced to second on a wild pitch and came across to score on a Joseph single through the left side.
Wagner added a run in the top of the eighth, pushing the lead to 9-5.
Norfolk State finished with five runs on eight hits, committed four errors and left seven on base, while Wagner registered nine runs on 10 hits, had two errors and stranded five base runners.
Dalton Barham (1-6) took the loss, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on seven hits, with four strikeouts and one walk in six innings of work. Nathan Manzer and John Horton pitched in relief.
Connor Hayden (8-0) picked up the win in 5.1 innings pitched. He gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, fanned four and walked one. Nicholas Hanson and Daniel Merkel (second save) saw action out of the bullpen.
