Brown Records Three Hits as Norfolk State Falls to Wagner

NORFOLK, Va. | Dionte Brown registered three hits and drove in one, as the Norfolk State University baseball team surrendered four runs in the first inning and could not recover in a 14-2 loss to Wagner College in Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Saturday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Baseball Field. 

Wagner (27-21 overall, 18-8 NEC) struck for four runs on three hits in the opening inning and added five more runs, highlighted by a two-run homer by David Melfi in the second inning, as the Seahawks stretched the advantage to 9-0 through two innings. 

The Seahawks added two more runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh inning, extending the lead to 14-0. 

Norfolk State (9-37, 6-20) picked up a run in the eighth as Brown, who went 3-for-5, led off the inning with a triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Raphael Rodriguez

In the ninth, Norfolk State scored one run on two hits, as Wagner earned the 14-2 victory. 

With two down in the frame, Kam Walker walked and advanced to second on a Steven Shaffer base hit to left. Brown followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Walker. 

The Spartans registered two runs on eight hits, committed one error and left 10 on base, while the Seahawks finished with 14 runs on 14 hits and stranded eight on base.  

Zac Capps (0-6) started on the mound, surrendering four runs on three hits, with a pair of walks and one strikeout in one inning of work. Max McCrary and Mac Yarbrough saw action out of the bullpen,  

Frankie Wright (3-3) earned the victory, scattering a pair of hits, fanning six and walking two in five innings. John LaPointe, Jagger Duquette, Will Saxenmeyer and Jason Masick pitched in relief.  

UP NEXT  
The Spartans wrap up the portion of their 2023 home campaign with Senior Day on Sunday against Wagner. Senior Day festivities begin at 11:30 a.m. and first pitch is set for 12 p.m. from Marty L. Miller Baseball Field.
