CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Spartans women's volleyball team wrapped up the 2023 Jefferson Cup Invitational with a four-set loss to the Revolutionaries of George Washington University.
Norfolk State's attack was led by Shonte Seale with 16 kills and 12 digs. Gabrielle Gilbert collected double digit kills with 12 in the match and ties for the team lead with three blocks. Sophomore setter Sydney McCree put up 27 assists while also leading the team 19 digs. Freshman Catori Crawford contributed four service aces.
GWU opened the first set taking a 6-3 lead before NSU pulled within two points, 11-9, following a kill from Alexa Harris. The Revolutionaries climbed back ahead by seven points, 18-11, however the Spartans answered with an 11-1 rally that evened the score at 19 all and saw Norfolk State pull ahead by three points, 22-19. Six NSU kills and three service aces by Catori Crawford to assist in the Spartan rally. George Washington climbed back within two, 24-22, but a Gabrielle Gilbert kill gave Norfolk State the set one victory.
The teams were neck and neck through the first eight serves of set two as the score was tied at 4-4. Norfolk State pulling on momentum from set one, went up 10-7 on a block from Gilbert and Adlene Jideofor. NSU continued to pull ahead 18-12 on six kills and an ace from Trinity Mitchell. The Revolutionaries went on an 8-2 rally to even the score at 20 all. GWU continued to roll claiming set two 25-21.
George Washington carried their momentum from the set two win into the third set quickly opening up a 10-3 lead. The Revolutionaries lead continued to grow as they led 20-12, but the Spartans chipped away at their lead to even the score at 20 all. After a GWU substitution, George Washington went on to claim set three 25-21 and a 2-1 match lead.
Set four began with GWU jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Norfolk State came as close as seven points, 17-10, but could not manage to catch George Washington throughout the remainder of the set as the Revolutionaries won set four 25-15 and the match 3-1.
Norfolk State is back in action this weekend, Sept. 22 and 24, as they open their home schedule against the Eagles of North Carolina Central. NSU and NCCU will square off at 6 PM in Gill Gymnasium in Norfolk, Va.
