NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team didn't need to travel far for its first competition action of the 2023 fall slate, competing in the Mock Dual Invite at Christopher Newport University this past weekend.
 
Two Spartans represented NSU at the competition, Gabriela Davidescu and Isbella Cottrell. Both new players to their team, it marked their first matches in the green and gold uniform.
 
Davidescu defeated Raine Weis in a thrilling three-set match against CNU's Raine Weis. After losing the first set 4-6, Davidescu took the next set 7-5, before grinding out the third set tiebreaker by a score of 10-6.
 
The transfer from VCU continued her hot start to the season with a straight-sets victory against Washington's (Md.) Soleil Namunyola. Davidescu won the first set 6-0, taking the second 6-2 for her second victory in as many matches.
