Spartans Trek Through Baltimore, Md. to Face Eagles and Bears

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State volleyball team heads north to Baltimore, Md. to face Coppin State today at 6 p.m. and Morgan State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The third-seeded Spartans (7-9, 2-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) battle second-seeded Coppin State (8-11, 4-0 MEAC) who is currently riding a four-game win streak, all in conference play. Morgan State (5-13, 1-3 MEAC) is currently coming off a 3-1 loss to South Carolina State and sit in sixth place in the MEAC.

The last time the Spartans met with Coppin State, Gabrielle GIlbert recorded a 14-kill, 10-dig double-double in the 3-1 loss 

LAST TIME OUT
  • Norfolk State fell to Delaware State 3-0 on Oct. 6 in Dover, Del.
  • Alexa Harris led the Spartans with nine kills; 
  • Jordan Lyons posted 13 digs, six kills, three service aces; Lily Rose-Pichon recorded double-digit digs as well (11)
  • Gabrielle Gilbert totaled seven kills, five digs, and three block assists
SERIES HISTORY
  • Coppin State hold a 21-6 record over the Spartans, winning the last six meetings since 2021
  • The Spartans defeated the Eagles last on Oct. 8, 2021 (3-1)
  • Morgan State hold a 14-12 record over the Spartans
  • The Spartans split the Bears last season, winning at home 3-1 in Oct. 15 and losing 3-0 in Baltimore, Md. on Nov. 5
EAGLES SCOUT
  • The Eagles went 2-0 with wins against North Carolina Central (3-1) and Coppin State (3-0)
  • TaKenya Stafford totaled two double-doubles: 12 kills and 10 digs against SCSU and 13 kills and 16 digs against N.C. Central
  • Kahea Carvalho combined for 46 and Azul Pilahg collected 20 assists between both games
  • The Eagles are undefeated in conference play with a 4-0 record
BEARS SCOUT
  • The Bears went 1-1 with a win over North Carolina Central (3-0) and a loss to South Carolina State (3-1)
  • The Bears are 1-3 in conference play currently
  • Against South Carolina State, Daniela Ferreira grabbed 17 kills, which led both teams; she also tallied 14 kills vs SCSU
  • Mya Karrick collected 32 assists against SCSU and 31 against NCCU
LOOKING AHEAD TO WHAT'S NEXT
Returning to Virginia, the Spartans face Hampton for the second time this season on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.

Norfolk State's next home game hosts Howard on Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. in a "Breast Cancer Awareness" game at Gill Gymnasium.
