Norfolk Hosts UMES for “White Out”; Travel to Dover, Del. for Hornets

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State volleyball team will look to continue its strong start in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play this weekend, as it hosts Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday for the "White Out" match at Gill Gymnasium at 6 p.m.

The Spartans then travel to Dover, Del. to face the Hornets of Delaware State on Sunday at Memorial Hall at 3 p.m.

The Spartans (6-8, 1-1 MEAC) split their matches against North Carolina Central (3-2 loss) and South Carolina State (3-1 win), last Friday and Sunday respectively, in the opening slate of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.

Delaware State (5-10, 1-1 MEAC) currently sits in fifth place in the MEAC.

LAST TIME OUT
  • Norfolk State fell in five sets to North Carolina Central in Durham. N.C. to open conference play
  • Gilbert's season-high in kills (24) notched her third 20-plus kill performance this season; Gilbert also finished with a double-double, recording 11 digs as well as two service aces and a solo block
  • The Spartans' assist leader, McCree, posted a season-high 39 assists against the Eagles for her seventh 30-plus assist performance; McCree seized 24 or more assists in ever game this season (13 matches)
  • Three players attained double-digit kills against the Eagles: Gilbert (24), Alexa Harris (19), and Jordan Lyons (13)
  • Lyons recorded a double-double: 13 kills and 16 digs; Lily Rose-Pichon finished with 23 digs
  • The Spartans defeated South Carolina State, 3-1, on Sunday in Orangeburg, S.C.

  • UMES leads the series 32-6 over the Spartans
  • The Hawks have won two consecutive match-ups against Norfolk State
  • The last meeting between the Hawks and the Spartans went to five sets; Gabrielle GIlbert finished with 21 kills in that game

HAWK SCOUT
  • The Hawks lost to Coppin State at home in five sets on Sept. 29
  • Nkemijka Ikemefuna totaled a 21-kill, 10-dig double-double against the Eagles
  • Ranyla Griggs tallied a double-digit kill performance as well finishing with 11 kills, six digs, and four block assists
  • Valeria Matias recorded a team-high 14 digs whilst Anisa Dorlouis secured 13
  • Four players posted four or more block assists: Griggs (4), Rayah Howell (5), Lilliana Montes (6), and Dorlouis (6)
  • Dorlouis, the Hawks' leader in assists, secured 36 against the Eagles
HORNET SCOUT
  • The Hornets defeated Morgan State in straight sets on Sunday, Sept. 29
  • Gerren Tomlin totaled 16 kills, two service aces, and 10 digs
  • Morgan Allen tallied 11 digs; Naz Tuncay recorded 19 assists
  • The Hornets as a team secured season-lows, holding their opponents to only kills (18), assists (17), and total blocks (3)
LOOKING AHEAD TO WHAT'S NEXT
The Spartans travel to Baltimore, Md. to play Coppin State on Friday, Oct. 11 and Morgan State on Sunday, Oct. 13.
