Spartans Drop Road Match at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. - The Norfolk State volleyball team fell in three sets to Delaware State on the road on Sunday.

The Spartans (7-9, 2-2 MEAC) were led by graduate outside hitter/defensive specialist Jordan Lyons, who finished the day with 13 digs, six kills, three service aces, and an assist. 

Sophomore Gabrielle Gilbert posted seven kills, five digs, three block assists, and a service ace, whilst senior outside hitter Alexa Harris added nine kills, a block assist and a dig. 

Junior Sydney McCree (12) and freshman Jasmine Mataira (10) tallied double-digit assists against the Hornets and Lily Rose-Pichon secured her 13th double-digit dig performance this season after finishing with 11 on Sunday.

Delaware State (6-10, 2-1 MEAC) finished with 50 kills, five service aces, and eight blocks to outlast the Spartans.

  • Harris led the team in kill with nine; joined by Gilbert with seven and Lyons with six
  • Rose-Pichon finished with 11 digs

  • Delaware State holds a 19-14 all-time series lead over the Spartans
  • The Hornets win their last two meetings over the Spartans which included the 3-0 win on Sunday and 3-1 on Oct. 29, 2023
  • The Spartans and Hornets face each other one other time this season on Sunday, Nov. 3 at home for the "Youth Day/Ice Cream Social" game at 1 p.m.
LOOKING AHEAD TO WHAT'S NEXT
Up next, Norfolk State travels to Baltimore, Md. to take on Coppin State and Morgan State on Friday and Sunday as part of its five-game road stand. After that, the Spartans head to Hampton, Va. for part two of the "Battle of the Bay" match-up this season on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
