Spartans Set for Discover Puerto Rico Shootout

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO --- The Norfolk State women's basketball team will play three games in San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout from Nov. 28-30.
 
The Spartans first battle the Washington State Cougars in a Thanksgiving Day matchup at Coliseo Guilermo Angulo at 4 p.m. EST.
 
The second matchup is on Nov. 29 at 1:30 EST against Wyoming and the third matchup is on Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. EST against Green Bay. All three matchups mark the first time the schools have met.
 
NSU defeated UNCW 71-52 on Saturday, Nov. 23 at UNCW, extending its winning streak against the Seahawks to four straight.
 
Diamond Johnson led all scorers with 20 points, six steals, and five assists, while Da'Brya Clark added a career-high 19 points. Kierra Wheeler (16), and Makoye Diawara (11) both scored in double-figures.
 
All Discover Puerto Rico Shootout games will air on FloSports. Fans will also be able to follow live stats on Statbroadcast.com.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Diamond Johnson led the Spartans in scoring with 20 points, adding six steals, six rebounds, and five assists
  • Da'Brya Clark (19), Kierra Wheeler (16), and Makoye Diawara (11) all scored in double digits
  • Ciara Bailey (2) and Jenesis Hill (1) both scored their first points in a Spartan uniform
  • Norfolk State shot over 50 percent in the first (10-of-19) and the fourth quarters (7-of-14)
  • NSU picked up 17 steals compared to UNCW's five steals

  • Stephanie Mosley made her Norfolk State debut, playing three minutes and dishing out an assist

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
  • Washington State enters Saturday's contest 2-3 after falling at Iowa 72-43 on Sunday, Nov. 24
  • Through four games the Cougars shoot 36.8 percent from the field while averaging 62.8 points per game
  • WSU returned three starters from last season, including senior Tara Wallack, junior Astera Tuhina, and sophomore Eleonora Villa
  • Sophomore Eleonora Villa leads the Cougars in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game
  • Senior Tara Wallack also averages double-digits with 12.2 points per game and a team-leading 6.8 rebounds per game
  • Head Coach Kamie Ethridge is in her sixth season as Washington State's head coach
 
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
  • Wyoming enters the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout 2-3, following a win over Colorado Christian on Friday, Nov. 22
  • Senior center Allyson Fertig leads UW with 17.8 points per game and leads the Mountain West in rebounds with 10.4.
  • Senior guard Emily Mellema (13.2) and senior guard/forward Tess Barnes (10.3) both average double-figures for the Cowgirls
  • Wyoming averages 62.6 points per game while shooting 42.3 percent from the field
  • Head coach Heather Ezell is in her third season as Wyoming's head coach
 
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX
  • Green Bay enters the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout 3-2 on the season, following a win over DePaul (70-57) on Thursday, Nov. 21
  • Senior guard Natalie McNeal (13.4) and senior guard/forward Maddy Schrieiber (13.0) both average double-figures for the Phoenix
  • Green Bay averages 62.2 points per game while shooting 40.6 percent from the floor.
  • UWGB enters the tournament on a three-game winning streak
  • Head coach Kayla Karius is in her third season at Green Bay
