Spartans Drop 4-3 Thriller to Longwood

NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team dropped another nailbiter on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-3 to Longwood at NSU Tennis Complex.

After dropping Saturday's match by the same score, Norfolk State received its second 4-3 loss in as many days against strong competition.

The Spartans won the opening doubles point for the second straight day. Norfolk State lost at the top position, but the No. 2 team of Jakub Solarski and Antoni Pankowski got the job done 6-2, while Deniz Okyay and Boris Lunin earned a 6-4 win at the No. 3 position.

Longwood evened the match 1-1, as Timeo Puech defeated Vladisav Gorbatenko 6-1, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. Alejandro Uribe gave the Lancers a lead with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Okyay on Court 3.

Peter Belosevic took down Solarski 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 slot to put the Lancers firmly in control. The Spartans wouldn't stop fighting, though, starting with Frederick McRae's 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Lorenzo Mechini at the No. 4 position.

Pankowski won another long, three-set battle at the No. 5 position, beating Luis Reis 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. The match came down to Court 6, a back-and-forth match between Boris Lunin and Seva Rusin. The latter escaped with a slim 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win to clinch the match for the Lancers.
