Hofstra Takes Down NSU 4-3 in Back-and-Forth Showdown

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team nearly pulled off a nonconference victory on Monday morning, dropping a home match against Drexel.
 
Hofstra (5-7) won the opening doubles point, winning two of the three matches. Gabriela Davidescu and Irina Ioana Iurea earned a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, but the Spartans (1-7) lost on Courts 2 and 3.
 
Hofstra took a 2-0 lead with Mary Madigan's 6-0, 6-1 victory over Isabella Cottrell at the No. 6 singles position, but Davidescu got the Spartans on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Deniz Soyer at the top slot.
 
Alessia Stan evened the match with a thrilling 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Abigail Higgins at the No. 3 position.
 
Sabira Mohamed defeated Laura Ruiz 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at the No. 5 slot, giving Hofstra a 3-2 advantage. Sabina Maria Iurea tied things up again with a swift straight set win over Ava Veneziano 7-5, 7-5.
 
The match came down to a battle on Court 2 between Irina Ioana Iurea and Kaitlyn Ferguson. Ferguson won the opening set 7-6 (7-1), but the NSU freshman bounced back to win the second 6-2. Hofstra won the match as Ferguson prevailed 6-3 in the final set.
 
Norfolk State returns to action on Thursday, facing North Carolina A&T State on the road.
