NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season in dominant fashion, defeating Virginia State 7-0 at NSU Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans swept doubles play to earn the first point of the day. Gabriella Davidsecu and Irina Iona Iurea cruised past Damita Bollers and Ginger Johnson 6-0, before
Laura Ruiz and Sabina Maria took down Joyce Gaither and Ashleigh Charles 6-1. Allesia Stan and
Isabella Cottrell pulled out a 6-3 victory over Alexice Burrows and Alexis Seymore soon after.
Irina Iona Iurea wasted no time finishing up her second match of the day, defeating Charles 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles position. Her twin sister, Sabina, took down Burrows by the same score at the No. 5 slot.
Cottrell won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 position over Seymore, and Davidescu continued her strong 2024 campaign with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Johnson at the top of the lineup. Ruiz defeated Gaither 6-1, 6-0 on Court 4 and Stan beat Bollers 6-1, 6-2 on Court 3.
Norfolk State returns to action next week, hosting Hampton on Wednesday, Mar. 6 at 10 a.m.
