NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State softball team hosted a conference series against the Eagles of North Carolina Central on Thursday, Mar. 21 at the NSU Softball Field. The Spartans fell in both doubleheader games: 3-0, in game one, and 5-3, in game two.
In game one, Rylie Gilbreath led the Spartans (2-28, 1-4 MEAC) with two hits in three at-bats. She singled as the leadoff batter in the first and once again in the bottom of the sixth. Gilbreath has an efficient batting average of .369 to go along with 31 hits, 6 doubles and two home runs. 
The Spartans had just their second game this season where they didn't pitch a single walk. Brierra Tyler pitched a complete game for the Spartans in game one of the doubleheader striking out eight of the 27 batters she faced.
In game two, the Spartans responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning to bring themselves within one run of the Eagles (7–21, 3-2 MEAC), 3-2.
Gilbreath hit a single to reach as the leadoff in the bottom of the third, then Aniyah Michalak was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for the Spartans. Loren Hudson hit a single which loaded the bases for the Spartans with none out.
Emree Sky Obispo walked with the bases loaded to score the first run of the game for the Spartans. Kira Turner was the next batter for the Spartans and she grounded out to score. The score is 3-2 at the bottom of the third at that point.
The Eagles scored in the top of the sixth and the Spartans responded with one in the bottom half of the inning. 
A perfectly placed single to center field by Gilbreath secured her third hit of the game and scored Kailey Bryant who was on third after a single and advanced on a passed ball and a groundout.
The Spartans would go down 5-3 in the seventh after a run was scored by the Eagles in the top of the seventh. The Spartans would lose 5-3 after a back-and-forth game against the Eagles.
The Spartans finished with 11 hits with multiple players finishing with multi-hit games: Rylie Gilbreath (3), Hudson (2), Lauren Sheehan (2), and Kailey Bryant (2). Sky Obispo and Kira Turner each recorded a hit as well.
Coming up - The Spartans close their series against N.C. Central, Friday at 11 a.m. before beginning a new series against Delaware State after a week from Friday on Mar. 29 and 30. Game one starts at 1 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
