NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State University softball team ended its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series against the North Carolina Central Eagles on Friday at the NSU Softball Field in a 3-2 loss.
The Spartans (2-29, 1-4 MEAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the Eagles (8-22, 4-2 MEAC) in the bottom of the first inning after singles by
Aniyah Michalak and
Loren Hudson.
Lauren Sheehan walked in her at-bat to load the bases for the Spartans, who would go on to score on a walk drawn by
Maddy Morris.
The starting pitcher for the Spartans,
Brierra Tyler, held the Eagles scoreless through the first four innings. Tyler in 4.0 innings allowed five hits and struck out four against 20 batters faced.
The Spartans fell 3-1 after a three-run fifth inning by the Eagles, but
Rylie Gilbreath's third home run of the season brought the Spartans within one run of the Eagles, 3-2.
Gilbreath leads the team in home runs (3), hits (32), and RBIs (12).
Coming up - The Spartans have a week off before they play again. They will host Delaware State on Friday, Mar. 29 in a MEAC doubleheader. The game is set to start 1 p.m. at the NSU Softball Field.
