NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team received significant contributions from its veterans on Friday at NSU Tennis Complex but couldn't overcome Hampton's depth in a 5-2 loss in the Battle of the Bay showdown.

Gabriela Davidescu and
Laura Ruiz teamed up for a 6-4 No. 1 doubles victory, before both players picked up wins in their respective singles matches.

Hampton won the opening doubles point with a 6-1 win on Court 2 and a 6-3 result on Court 3.

Mio Kozaki kept the momentum going for the Pirates, defeating Norfolk State freshman
Irina Ioana Iurea 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 positions, before Meiri Okuwaki took down
Alessia Stan 6-2, 6-1 at the No. Â 3 slot.

Davidescu earned the eighth win of her last nine singles matches, cruising past Diana Starodubtseva 6-3, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. Ruiz added another point to the Spartans' total soon after, beating Sofia Sokolova 6-2, 6-3 on Court 4.

Hampton closed out the match with a pair of wins, as Lucia Jorrin Fernandez defeated
Sabina Maria Iurea 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position and Masa Mitic bested Cottrell 6-0, 6-1 on Court 6.
