Spartans Head to Charleston for Buc Dome Invitational

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State volleyball team looks to build on a strong rivalry win this weekend at the Buc Dome Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern from Sept. 20-21 in Charleston, S.C. 

The Spartans (3-6) come off a straight set victory over Hampton on Tuesday to face Sacred Heart (3-6) and Western Illinois (3-5) on Friday at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively, and Charleston Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

With one more win, head coach Kathy Bullock will secure her 400th career victory.  

LAST TIME OUT 

  • Norfolk State defeated rival Hampton on Tuesday in straight sets in the 34th edition of the Battle of the Bay 

  • Sophomore Gabrielle Gilbert tallied 20 kills, four digs, two block assists, two service aces, and a solo block against the Pirates 

  • Junior Lily-Rose Pichon totaled 13 digs for her fifth consecutive game of 10 or more digs 

  • Junior Sydney McCree notched 37 assists, bringing her season total to 281 through nine games 

PIONEER SCOUT 

  • Sacred Heart competed in the Army Tournament from Sept. 13-15 against Bryant, Hofstra, and Army 

  • The Pioneers lost all three of their matches in the tournament: 3-1 to both Army and Bryant, then 3-0 to Hofstra 

  • Allison Murray collected 13 kills, six digs, three service aces, and two blocks against Bryant, then 10 kills, five digs against Hofstra, and 14 kills, 11 digs against Army 

  • Luginbuhl tallied a double-double against Bryant: 12 kills and 11 digs 

  • Miliani Villarrel posted 10+ dig performances in each match of the tournament: Bryant (19), Hofstra (12) and Army (14) 

LEATHERNECK SCOUT 

  • Western Illinois competed in the UND Classic from Sept. 13-14 against Belmont and North Dakota 

  • The Leatherneck split their two games against Belmont – a 3-1 loss and 3-0 victory – before falling to North Dakota 3-0 

  • Keyana Cruse secured 17 kills, nine digs, and three block assists in the first match against Belmont. She tallied 19 digs against North Dakota, and 13 digs in the second matchup with Belmont 

  • Karli Wenzel notched 30 digs in the second Belmont showdown 

BUCCANEER SCOUT 

  • Charleston Southern lost 3-0 to College of Charleston on Tuesday 

  • Skylar Yates tallied 14 kills and six digs for the Buccaneers 

  • Both Julia Fledderjohn and Ilaria Durante notched double-digit dig performances, collecting 12 each 

  • Durante led the Bucs in assists, posting 23 against the Cougars 

SERIES HISTORY 

  • Norfolk State and Sacred Heart compete for the second time in program history  

  • The Pioneers defeated the Spartans in the last meeting, 3-1, on Sept. 21, 2013 

  • Norfolk State and Western Illinois play for the first time in program history on Friday 

  • The Spartans have played the Buccaneers three times with the Bucs holding a 2-1 lead in the series; their last meeting came on Sept. 9 in 2017  

UP NEXT 

Firday's showdown begins a five-match road stretch for the Spartans from Sept. 20-29. Norfolk State's next home match will come against Maryland Eastern Shore on Oct. 4 with a "White Out" theme.
