Norfolk State Begins MEAC Play Against NCCU and SCSU

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State volleyball team ends the month of September with matches on Sept. 27 and Sept. 29 on the road against North Carolina Central and South Carolina State, respectively.

Norfolk State defeated both the Eagles and the Bulldogs in each of their meetings last season.

The Spartans carry positive momentum into Durham, N.C. and Orangeburg, S.C. after defeating Charleston Southern in straight sets on Sept. 21.

Norfolk State tallied 12 service aces for a season-high against the Buccaneers after Gabrielle GIlbert and Jasmine Mataira combined for nine. Sydney McCree posted 24 or more assists in every match this season, collecting 24 against the Bucs.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Spartans (5-7) competed in the Buc Dome Invitational from Sept. 20-21, posting a 2-1 record with wins against Sacred Heart and Charleston Southern
  • Gilbert and McCree each garnered MEAC weekly honors for the week of Sept. 16-22; Gilbert (MEAC Player of the Week) and McCree (MEAC Setter of the Week)
  • Across the three matches, Gilbert recorded 36 kills and six service aces, McCree secured 58 assists, and Lily-Rose Pichon totaled 34 digs
  • In the Charleston Southern sweep, the Spartans recorded a season-high 12 service aces: Gilbert notched four and Jasmine Mataira posted five
  • The Spartans carry momentum with them on the road against NCCU and SCSU
SERIES HISTORY
  • NCCU leads the all-time series 13-5 over the Spartans, but Norfolk State holds a two-match win streak against the Eagles
  • The Spartans lead the all-time series against SCSU, 12-9, holding a eight matches win streak since 2018
  • Seven of Norfolk State's last eight wins have come in straight sets over the Bulldogs
EAGLE SCOUT
  • NCCU (2-9) competed in the Queen City Invitational co-hosted by Queens and Charlotte from Sept. 20-21
  • The Eagles went 1-2 in the tournament with a five-set win over Charlotte, whilst losing to East Tennessee State (3-2) and Queens (3-0)
  • Against ETSU, the Eagles tallied a season-high 17 service aces and 16 block assists; Kamren Harper notched 19 kills, four players totaled 10+ digs, Gabriela Felix-Baeza grabbed seven service aces, and four players secured three or more block assists
  • In their five-set thriller over Charlotte, the team garnered season-highs in kills (66) and assists (61), three totaled 10+ kill performances (Harper, Emmi Modlin, and Kayden Cupid), and Felix-Baeza notched 29 digs
  • Bella Dearinger totaled 109 across the three matches in the tournament: ETSU (35), Queens (23), and Charlotte (51)
BULLDOG SCOUT
  • The Bulldogs (1-8) lost of all their matches by a score of 3-0 in the Wofford College Invitational to Wofford, Valparaiso, and Presbyterian from Sept. 17-21
  • Across three matches, Hailey Harris totaled 17 kills, Trinity Stevenson notched 36 digs, and Kaia Barrett recorded 33 assists
  • SCSU are on a five-match losing streak since Sept. 14

The Norfolk State volleyball team hosts Maryland Eastern Shore for a "White Out" game at Gill Gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 4 in Norfolk,Va.
