Spartans Traveled to Charlotte to Face 49ers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Norfolk State volleyball team fell to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, 3-0, Wednesday evening in its first road game of the season.

The Spartans (2-2) garnered a 15-5 lead early in the first set behind senior Alexa Harris and graduate Jordan Lyons who combined for six kills during that span.

With the first set tied 22-22, the Spartans lost their lead after two 49ers kills and an attack error. Norfolk State would go on to lose set one 25-22.

Junior Sydney McCree fed into sophomore Gabrielle Gilbert to start the second set as Gilbert scored five of the first seven points for the Spartans.

Freshman Reagan Chisholm tallied a block and a kill in that span as well.

After a kill by Harris and an attack error by the 49ers, the Spartans were able to take a 21-20 lead. Charlotte fought back with four consecutive points to take a 24-21 lead.

Norfolk State didn't give up as a service error by the 49ers gave the Spartans a chance down 24-22.

McCree's impact was crucial in the rally for the 23rd Spartan point as she allowed for four scoring chances. She tallied two sets and two digs that would result in a kill by Gilbert, as the Spartans closed the lead, 24-23.

The comeback ended after a kill by the 49ers won them the set two, 25-23.

The Spartans fell in set three after a slow start resulted in a 9-1 run for Charlotte that the Spartans couldn't overcome. The 49ers won set three 25-16 to win the match.

Gilbert led the team with 16 kills as Harris finished with 10. McCree tallied 28 assists, team-high nine digs, and two service aces.
