NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's basketball team opens conference play this weekend after a spectacular start to the 2024-25 season.

The Spartans (9-7) host Maryland Eastern Shore (4-12) at Echols Hall this Saturday, Jan. 4 at 4 p.m. Norfolk State hits the road from there to face Delaware State (7-7) at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6.

NSU carries a wave of momentum into its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate, competing stoutly against elite competition in the first half of the season. The Spartans earned nonconference victories over the following conferences: Sun Belt (James Madison), CAA (Hampton, Stony Brook), Big West (UC Davis), SWAC (Alabama State, Grambling State), and Big South (High Point).

The Spartans faced their fiercest competition of the year earlier this week, holding their own for 40 minutes. Tennessee, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, took down NSU 67-52 on Tuesday behind a strong 3-point shooting performance.

Despite falling 81-66 to Maryland last week, UMES outscored the Terrapins 42-41 in the second half to leave College Park on a positive note. The Hawks are led by Ketron "KC" Shaw, the MEAC's leading scorer averaging 19.5 points per game.

Like Norfolk State, Delaware State went 2-0 at the recent CP3 HBCU Classic with wins over Grambling State and Alabama State. Graduate guard Martaz Robinson paces the Hornets with 15.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest.

Both games will air on ESPN+ with radio coverage available on WNSB 91.1 FM.
