PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — The Norfolk State volleyball team fell in a five-set battle against UMES on Friday evening, losing 25-23, 23-25, 13-25, 26-24, 13-15.
The Spartans dropped to 1-15 overall and 0-3 in MEAC play, while UMES improved to 6-10 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Gabrielle Gilbert led Norfolk State with 23 kills, matching the seventh-highest single-match total in NSU history.
Sydney McCree paced the offense with 36 assists.
Jasmine Mataira and Gilbert each added four aces, and
Briana Ellis contributed three.
Mya Wood led the defense with 14 digs, while
Ava Berry added four blocks at the net.
UMES jumped to a 5-2 lead in the first set, but the Spartans responded with an ace from Gilbert and a kill from Berry to take their first lead. Norfolk State stretched the advantage to 16-12, forcing a Hawks timeout. After the timeout, Mataira added a kill, and NSU extended its lead to 21-14 late in the set. UMES rallied to 23-22, but Gilbert and
Isis Castille closed the set, giving Norfolk State a 25-23 win.
In the second set, UMES opened with a 9-5 lead before Norfolk State responded with a 5-0 run to take a 14-12 advantage. The teams battled to a 21-21 tie, but UMES finished on a 3-0 run to win 25-23.
UMES dominated the early third set, building a 13-5 lead and extending it to 19-11. The Hawks closed the set 25-13.
In the fourth set, UMES led 10-6, but Norfolk State tied the match with four straight points, including kills from Gilbert and Castille and two aces from Ellis. NSU took its first lead at 13-12 after a Hawks attack error. The set remained tied 21-21 before the Spartans scored the final three points on two Gilbert kills and a Berry kill, winning 26-24 and forcing a fifth set.
Norfolk State opened the fifth set with a 5-3 lead after a Gilbert kill. UMES grabbed its first lead at 9-8, but NSU went on a three-point run to take an 11-9 advantage. The Hawks ended the set and match on a 6-2 run, winning 15-13.
Norfolk State will return home on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. against Delaware State at Gills Gymnasium.
