NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State men's basketball put on a show Wednesday night at Echols Hall, cruising past Regent University 119-55. The Spartans' offensive explosion set a new Division I program record for points in a game, surpassing the previous mark of 118 set last season against the University of Virginia Lynchburg.
Junior transfer
Devon Ellis led a balanced attack with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding four rebounds, four steals, and a block.
Anthony McComb III followed with 18 points, while
Jordan Leaks poured in 15. Freshman point guard
Adrean Newton notched his first career double-figure game with 14 points, and
Keyontae Lewis (12),
Mekhi Reid (10), and
Elijah Jamison (10) also scored in double digits.
Melo Baines and
Jaquel Morris shared team-high honors on the glass with seven rebounds apiece, while Leaks dished out a team-best six assists to go along with four steals.
The Royals struck first with a deep three, trading baskets with the Spartans early to take a 12-11 edge into the first media timeout. Coming out of the break, Norfolk State flipped the momentum with a 10-0 surge sparked by a McComb triple and seven quick points from Ellis, including a putback, a dunk, and a three-pointer to force a Regent timeout.
NSU extended the lead as Newton connected from long range and Jamison hit a pull-up jumper to make it 27-12. After a brief Regent response, Baines powered through for an and-one to push the lead back to 15. The Spartans kept their foot on the gas, as Leaks drained a midrange jumper and
My'kel Jenkins turned a steal into a corner three.
The Spartan defense locked down over the next six minutes, holding the Royals scoreless during a 22-0 run that stretched the margin to 58-23. Norfolk State entered the locker room up 62-29 behind a balanced effort led by Lewis (10 points) and strong first-half contributions from Ellis, Leaks, and McComb (8 apiece). Regent's Christian Brown paced all scorers at the break with 15.
The second half brought more of the same. Norfolk State opened with a 15-2 burst to go up 77-31 just four minutes in and never looked back, building a 50-point advantage midway through the period. The Spartans closed strong, finishing on a 28-14 run to seal the record-setting 119-55 victory.
